Non-binary, intersex, gender-nonconforming, and trans individuals will have this option moving forward.
The State Department issued its first passport with the letter “X” as the gender indicator for an individual who uses gender-neutral pronouns. The passport applicant has been in a legal battle with the government since 2015 over the binary offerings of “M” or “F” on passports. The State Department indicated in June of this year that it would allow people to choose “X” on their passports moving forward.
U.S. special diplomatic envoy for LGBTQ rights, Jessica Stern said that the decision of the Department acknowledges Americans who do not identify as a man or a woman. “When a person obtains identity documents that reflect their true identity, they live with greater dignity and respect. We see this as a way of affirming and uplifting the human rights of trans and intersex and gender-nonconforming and nonbinary people everywhere.”
